BEFORE ACQUIRING MY KNOWLEDGE AND MY CREDENTIALS, I WAS ONCE WHERE YOU ARE
Twelve years ago, my business partner and I managed to scale our fashion business to an IYKYK following. And that’s when we got served [ by a logistics partner, of all companies ]…
We were both in our twenties and absolutely confused and terrified. We were making a profit, year-on-year, but not nearly enough to pay the damages that they were claiming.
To make matters worse, they had a shark of a law firm representing them, and we were (fashionable) tuna. I didn’t think we stood a chance; I hadn’t graduated from law school or even started seriously dealing with the Companies Act.
I hid this fear and sent an email of acknowledgement, promising rectification by a set date. Then, we held an emergency meeting, took meeting minutes, and submitted them to the secretary of state, aka, the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), and POOF! Just like that, our unique mark and intellectual property were signed away.
A year and a few distinctions later, I realised that our company had been well within its rights to refuse to acquiesce and to counter-claim. But instead, we shuttered the business and moved on, just as we were ready to scale!
